The war in Afghanistan is happening now
The war in Afghanistan is happening now, in our time. Our Canadian soldiers work hard and suffer so much to serve their country, ensuring the safety of Canadians and the world while helping the people of that far away land. Because this is happening now, Canadians are beginning to understand what "doing their job" means to our soldiers. Of course the closer we are to any one soldier, the more real his work and suffering and honor and commitment is to us. We, the families of the fallen soldiers, are living with our private grief and immense loss as best we can, day by day. We each have our own way of grieving and remembering, some more public, some very private. The truth is, as a group, the soldiers killed in this war in Afghanistan have become a part of history. Individually they had their own talents and interests. As a group, they shared the courage and commitment to put themselves in danger's way in order to make a difference in an intolerable situation. 
The truth is, the soldiers wounded in Afghanistan sacrificed their continued quality of life in order to make that difference. The truth is, the soldiers who came home whole and those who are at this moment "doing their job" as Canadian soldiers share the same courage and commitment with their brothers-in-arms. So there is the private, personal loss and memories of each family for their fallen soldier, but there is also the bigger picture of a group of brave, caring soldiers who together have become a part of history that will be remembered together far longer than the individuals themselves. We are glad our sons and daughters will be remembered after our time. We would rather have them with us now, but they were determined to do their jobs and they deserve to be remembered in history. To all these brave men and women, it is worth it and they deserve their place in history.
